With only someone’s license plate number anyone can typically find out the make, model, and year of a car. Let’s face it though, you can probably figure this out just looking at the car up close. Of course there are online databases with claims they’ll provide additional information if you pay a fee for it. Often these sites don’t work and sometimes might even be illegal. With this in mind, I decided to use my own license plate number to give a popular one a try to see what information I’d get.
Wow. My name was not the guy’s name in the information and my vehicle is registered in the state of Georgia; which I entered to insure the search would bring back accurate information. You can imagine my additional surprised when I saw my car was falsely registered in Connecticut. Yeah. That. Not so much happy going on considering I live in the Greater Atlanta Area and its’ registered within the county I reside in. #Fail
Cranking up the chat on their website proved boringly comical. Let’s just say they understood my concern and reiterated three times. It clearly stated on their site the organizations where they pull information from and for some reason Aria felt the need to repeat that to me (multiple times.) That’s when I couldn’t hold my laugh any longer, and LOL may have followed with a “that’s a comical claim, Aria, considering I used my own car’s registered license plate number and the ownership information is completely incorrect.”
You can imagine how it went from there, but I will say this. I got my money back.
Honestly though, unless it’s deep criminal activity going on with a serious desire to commit grand theft auto that has access to some serious tools to use, you may not need to worry. The ones that easily have “all access” to your personal information, is law enforcement.
However, whether you have a beater you’re selling, or an exotic worth over $100K and anything in between; if you’re uncomfortable by all means, cover it up.
The thumb.
Yes, it will hide the license plate number if you place your thumb carefully when taking a picture with your cell phone in the other hand. Could be an awkward task though. You’ll never need to bother if you get a 20-seconds offer from Car Buyer USA. Once you do, we do all the work and you get the highest cash offer. How’s all that for no risk to you.
The blur thing.
Sure, an app or computer software will do the job, but in the amount of time it takes you to capture the picture and open it up in the right app/software, then to follow the app/software process to blur out the plate number, you could have already gotten a phone call from one of our friendly and knowledgeable agents. How’s all that for no risk to you?
The paper thing.
Sure, you can tape a piece of paper over the license plate number. That works good. You could even get someone to hold the sheet of paper over it, that works too. But see “the blur” above. It shows you the time and hassle you could save and at no risk to you.
The ground thing.
Let’s think about this for a moment. You can, but really? This is hysterical, but really? Use tape then refer to “the blur” above again and save some time and hassle. How’s all that for no risk to you?
The seriously though thing.
We realize in this Internet Cybercrime world you can’t be too careful, but when do you not need to worry about it when running an online ad with pictures? When should you worry?
Facts
- You drive your car, truck, van, or SUV down the road all the time. Spoiler alert. It’s illegal to cover your license plate and press the gas pedal.
- You park your car in a lot when you’re shopping.
- You park your car at work.
- You park your car publicly constantly.
Maybe it depends.
- Where do you live?
- What car do you drive? Is it a highly desirable vehicle? I might cover if so.
- What’s the value of your car, truck, van, or SUV? Expensive? Really expensive? If so, I might even cover my plate.
- What vehicles are on the current hot car(s) theft list?
Things to consider.
- The majority of people aren’t interested in the trail your license plate would take them down.
- The majority of people are not car thieves.
- The majority of people are not affiliated with chop shops.
- The majority of people are not associated with car theft rings.
- The majority of people are not Cybercriminals.
Things to consider when making a judgment call.
- Do you live in a high crime area?
- On a quick stop, do you leave the keys in the ignition, or worse, your car running?
- Do you leave the keys in the ignition, above the visor, under the front seat, etc. when your car is parked in your driveway?
- Thinking of your driveway, do you leave your windows down?
- Etc.
The questions above are all feasible concerns; but we become comfortable. I need to stop leaving my windows down and my car unlocked outside my place. Any one of these put you at a higher risk of losing your vehicle forever.
Whether to cover or not cover the license plate number when you run an ad online in an attempt to sell your car quick, really leans toward comfort levels, what’s the monetary value of your vehicle, and other common sense factors. The majority can most likely relax and not worry. I’d have no problem not covering my license plate even in a Craigslist ad, especially after the debacle mentioned above.
